Message from the Dean, XSoS

" Invoking Sustainability. Inspiring Futures "

S.Peppin, PhD

Professor and Dean

Xavier School of Sustainability

Sustainability has become a universally acceptable principle and strategy for business and social development. The triple bottom line that advocates for the integration of people, profit and planet or equity, economy and environment for promoting sustainability and sustainable development poses many challenges to all of us. While business and social organizations are increasingly encouraged to embrace sustainability, the task is much more challenging for the academic institutions.

The science and study of sustainability is so demanding that any attempt to create a space for sustainability as a distinct discipline in the ocean of academia calls for careful attention. The views and perspectives on sustainability are diverse, dynamic and deep. Therefore, defining and giving meaning to sustainability to meet the needs and requirements of different stakeholders is possible only if we continue to invoke the power of sustainability which we believe is divine. We believe that sustainability is like a perennial spring that we could rely on without distressing its regenerative capacity.

Xavier School of Sustainability (XSoS) is established to invoke sustainability. The mission of Xavier University Bhubaneswar (XUB) is ‘Inspiring Futures.’ We at XSoS believe that this mission can be achieved faster and better by invoking sustainability. The various programmes and activities that we have initiated so far are aimed towards this endeavour.

I am happy to say that within a short period of time, we have been able to network with some of the leading organisations to create an ecosystem for learning, research and action. The members of our Strategic Academic Advisory Board (SAAB) represent UN, Bilateral, Corporate, Public and Civil Society organisations. The Sustainability Leadership Summit we organized on 5-6 July 2015 has helped us create a strong platform to anchor and accelerate our initiatives. We have prepared a road map for our school which presents our vision 2025. We would like to be a globally recognized school with a difference making ourselves sensitive and relevant to the local needs.

I take this opportunity to invite you to join our journey towards discovering and invoking sustainability for healing and nurturing ‘Our Common Home.’
